A book will be written from Marea 21, the residency program that hosted the visual artist and writer Giulia Crispiani and the curator and independent researcher Michele Bertolino
It will be "a gesture of gratitude towards Carol LeWitt, Sandra, Pasquale, Leo, Carmelina, Giovanni Cap' e Patella, Piero, Anthony, Paolo, and all the people we met during our journey in Praiano and along the coast»- say Giulia and Michele.
It will be a tribute to the book "Sunrise and Sunset at Praiano" by Sol LeWitt published in 1980, a collection of medium format photos of literal observation of the sky of Praiano, with its infinite sunrises and sunsets that are different every day. A book that "will celebrate all that is oral and will welcome within it the states we have lived here, from the isolation connected to seasonality, to the generosity of the territory."

The form of the book will allow these images and practices to exist here and elsewhere. It comes from the desire to leave something of our passage in Praiano. On the other hand, the book is the form in which we met.

Smoke signals: declarations of love between Torre Asciola and Casa L'Orto
Starting from the territory and from the meetings during Marea 21, Giulia and Michele idea was to map the environment from an emotional point of view; tracing those places they discovered was essential for them and the community. «We thought about the places where we went to watch the sunset or to listen to the sea to connect them with light signals or colored smoke, to put them in communication.»
In their emotional geography, they identified the Torre Asciola di Praiano and Casa L'Orto, Carol and Sol LeWitt's home during the month in residence. From these two places, visually communicating, smoke signals have been launched, like love letters scattered throughout the territory.
«Launching signals were very strong, even from a sentimental point of view. A frequent condition resumes in these places: we are far away, but if we have the same intentions or the same desire to share an emotion, we are together.
Because to meet in these places, we have to follow instructions. There is an expanded community that, especially in winter, struggles to encounter due to the weather conditions. Colored smoke signals, even if ephemeral, were a crucial communication. It means that two people, albeit in two different places, if they have the same intentions and agree on times and positions, they become one body ".

In the emotional map drawn by Giulia and Michele, the so-called Fontana dell'Altare could certainly not be missing, a natural cove in the Praiano marina of Cala La Gavitella, obtained from a cave where the power of the sea resounds strongly in that cathedral made of rocks. "We discovered it on a sunny day, after a week of incessant rain. We met Sandra, who told us about the place where "the cave slams under the bed."
We went to look for it, and we found a beautiful place, full of a series of intersections that always return in people's daily lives.
Piccoletto also knew it. He had given us directions on how to reach it: if there was a rough sea, it was impossible to go from below, we had to get it from above ".

Ci hanno detto di non arrivare fino a giù, perché a giudicare da come sbatteva la grotta stamattina sicuramente c’era il mare di sotto – ovvero, un mare che sembra piatto da sopra, ma quando incontra la costa ci s’infrange.
In effetti ogni paio di minuti il mare gonfio cade in discesa e trovando lo scoglio, esplode e si solleva, come per provare ad oltrepassarlo.
L’aria è il solo limite del mare. Un peso altrettanto denso sopra, un colore simile, un corpo espanso grande quanto tutto il pianeta.

Smoke Signals: "Tramonto a Costantinopoli"
The artistic process restitution of Marea 21 took place at sunset in Piazza Costantinopoli in Praiano. While the sun plunged into the sea, the curator Michele Bertolino and the artist Giulia Crispiani read poems written by Giulia and passages selected by Michele to the Praiano community.
The reading was preceded by the lighting of blue smoke that, like an iridescent cloud, was dispersed among the sunset shades, one of the most beautiful of the Amalfi coast.
